Have a new client farm and working with their new herd members. One juvie female was considered to be "crazy"!! from "crazy mom"!! Well OK -- I have been working with her and things are moving along well -- but one behavior I've noticed -- she wants to face me always. At first I struggled (even with catch rope she turned the most unpredictable way and then reminded myself as to how important pen position is. ( I can get a tad lazy about this point!) I've been focused on this and yet she still seems to be the most comfortable facing me. She will even rub me when I'm in her front sight. Most calm then and easist to do bracelet and haltering. Most uncomfortable when I'm in her least "danger zone". Has anyone else experienced this - For me this is so odd.
Appreciate any advice and/or comments.

We've just found our first dead cria. I stupidly allowed them up to the top field where the good grass is knowing that Julia was due sometime soon. Rog assumed that I thought she wasn't going to produce today, which I didn't. Have just been up there to find a full term, large, perfectly formed cria dead and cold. I assume that it was a breach birth as the head and neck were covered in blood and the feet had never touched the ground, one horn of the placenta was torn. I am assuming that the baby probably asphyxiated in the birth canal, there was a lot of blood around Julia's hind quarters. We both blame ourselves for not checking, I should certainly know better. But nothing can be changed now even though the paramedic in me ran inside with her, put her on the Aga and tried 30 mins CPR.

My question now is Julia was a maiden, she was sat with the cria, we have put it back in the field as it our belief that animals work it out for themselves (we bring the dogs back from the vet and put them in their basket for 24hrs before they go to their final resting place. Are we doing the right thing with Julia and how long should we leave her baby?

Do I need to do anything for Julia to stop her milk or will that happen naturally?

We were taking pictures of the alpacas yesterday and this one yearling, went into the halter and on the lead fine, she also walked to where we wanted to be for the pictures, then all of a sudden she started running around me, then coming towards me and when she got to me she snuggled into my neck, that didn't bother me but what did bother me was after a little bit she was panting heavily, her nostrils were flaring and still running in circles, then out of nowhere she jumped up in the air and slammed herself down onto her side on the ground. What was that for and do I need to have her checked out by the vet?

Using clicker Training to help with Medical Treatments

The vet tried to locate it and remove it, but it disappeared, probably flattening against the eye where it was not visible. Anyway, that left me with having to put antibiotics in for a few days to prevent infection. Gypsy was not a happy alpaca!

I used the clicker to help him understand that I wanted to touch near his eye and also that I wanted him to keep his head near me. I have been able to put the drops in, not as expertly as I would like though. Afterward, it is clear he is not too happy with me as he walks off.

However, I have found that if I just ask him to stand and practice a familiar routine like walking around him and then clicking and rewarding, he very quickly gets over the unpleasantries.

What I would like to know is, is there an easy way to use the bracelet and administer the eyedrops on the right side without assistance? I have been simply working on his right side to get them in, but it is not as elegant as I would like it to be for him. Does one do it similarly to applying wormer? I have to be able to see the eye.

I have a friend who just started a sheep farm and he asked me about this program. I've tried to research it online and can't find anything that's current. Does anyone know if this program is still active? It could be called something else. It actually sounded like a wonderful idea.
