View Full Version : Feeding ?, height for feeding tubs

My question is about the appropriate height for the feeding tubs. I have them at the top of the rail on the fence right now, so about 3 - 4 foot. It seems that my shorter alpaca (Aden) head is right about the tub. I have heard that with dogs it's better to feed them with their feed bowls above the ground than on the floor. So maybe my tubs are too high, but is it alright for the llama/alpaca to eat lower? I know the food has a long way to go with that long neck.

Hi Kelly - the dog rule does not apply to alpacas. They can actually eat at ground level because they are made to graze all day. I have my feeders at about 18 inches off the ground only because I have so many I cannot have them off the ground without them stepping in them and I don't like possibly poopy feet stepping in feed.
For my creep pen (for crias) they are on the ground.

I agree that the feeding at ground level is the best way to feed when possible.
