Black??? flies?

My animals seem to be bothered by these little black gnats, not really black flies but all around their ears and really bothersome it appears - they bother me!! What can you safely use to deter these pests? :rolleyes:

Thank goodness, that is one pest we do not have here. Has anyone had experience with a safe repellent for them?
