Our llama Freckles is not doing well and I just wanted to get some advice. We have been in contact with the Vet and he has been giving us things to do for him. I should point out that Freckles is overweight.

About two weeks ago we noticed that Freckles was a little lethargic, we contacted the Vet and he was diagnosed as heat stressed. He told us to keep him under a fan, water his belly a lot and make sure he had plenty of water. We did this and by the next week he did not seem any better. We contacted the vet, had some blood work done and it showed that his protein count was low, the CK was way high as well as the AST (SGOT). He was put on Baytril, 2 quarts of electrolytes mixed with a high protein feed.

It appeared that we had rounded the corner and he seemed to be getting better, he would get up easier and stay up for awhile. He was eating hay, and drinking. This morning when we went out to take care of everyone, Freckles tried to get up and he fell down. We were able to get him up again and his left front ankle would not hold him and it kept going the opposite way it should.

I should point out that he is alert, will eat feed out of our hands and will eat hay; he is drinking plenty of water and we are continuing to give him 2 quarts of electrolytes twice a day.

I thought perhaps someone else has been through something similar and might have some additional things we can try. Right now the vet told us to get him up every two hours and let him stand. He did suggest we try to walk him also, but that is not working as every time he tries to take a step he stumbles and he is scared.

Thanks or any help you can provide.

Hi Donna, I'm so sorry about Freckles. A body wrap might help, and body work, particularly on his legs to aid circulation there, would be a good idea. If the front ankle is the primary problem, does your vet think an x-ray is indicated? Please keep us posted, and let us know if you need more details on the touches or on using the body wrap.
good luck,
