Marty: I recently had my male llama castrated . I was wondering how long it will take for him to "calm down." He was castrated one month ago. Earlier today I placed on of my large female llamas with him to see if he still "had the drive" to reproduce...well, he still does. The female llama cushed immediately and he doing what an intact male llama should do. Should I stop the "breeding?" Am I promoting the incorrect behavior by placing him with a female? The reason I castrated him was so he would not have to live alone. (I picked my largest female because she can the stop the encounter if she wanted to.)

HI, my experience is that it takes 6 months to a year or more for the total behavior change to happen. I think it would be best to keep him separate until at least 6 months goes by. Actually it is not out of the relm of possibility that he successfully bred your female. I think three months is the soonest you can count on the sperm being out of the males system I hope you didn't not want a breeding because I think you got one. Hope that helps marty
