Has anyone heard of such a thing? An alpaca belonging to a friend of mine had appeared as any other for the 7 yrs she had her. Easy keeper, easy breeder, nice crias. This past summer she was at my farm for breeding, yet I was unable to get her to accept a stud. She hadn't been here very long so I wasn't yet concerned when I had to leave home for a few days. The second day I was gone my farm feeder called to say Beau had suddenly gotten sick, so we sent her into the vet.
They did blood work which came back totally toxic and her owner decided to have her put down. Now comes the weird part. I asked for a necropsy to be sure we weren't dealing with something contagious. In her first stomach was digesting hay, same in second with still nothing suspicious showing. When he opened her third stomach he found that it was FULL of small stones and gravel. He was unable to determine how long or why she had been eating and retaining rocks. Has anybody ever heard of something like this? Or a probable cause? Any of our contributing vets have something? We here are hoping to here from anyone with a clue.
