Hi Marty!
I attended one of your 2 day clinics a couple years ago. I recommend your techniques and clinics to everyone and we are completely sold on the halters. We have found them to not only work best with the llamas and alpacas but have been able to fit them perfectly to the 4H show lambs. We are hoping to order a large supply to have on hand for buyers, sheep and others. Do you have any type of quantity discounts?

Another question...I keep having people pass on buying our 4H trained
llamas and go buy cheap wild unruly llamas. They then come back to me
to find out how what to do with these llamas they can't catch or
handle. Recently someone purchased two cria that have not yet been
weaned. The sellers allowed them to go ahead and take the moms too
until the cria are weaning age. Unfortunately the sellers believe
that since they only use them as guard llamas there is no need to
halter break them. Not sure how they go about handling their basic
care. So the moms are very wild and unapproachable and the buyers
wanted to know if there is anything they can do.

Any suggestions on where they would start? They did purchase your
book and I wondered about them attempting the catch rope but they have
no camelid experience at all. I believe they have had them for about
3 weeks. They will not yet eat from their hands or allow anyone to
touch them. They have been separating the moms from their babies in
order to work with and handle the babies.

I am so glad you like the halters and that they are working well for you. The halter are normally $18 and are $16 if you buy 6 or more. If you are a guild member you receive the halters at a 20% discount making them $14.40 regardless of quantity.

As far as helping people with their animals...I would offer to help these folks with animals that they don't buy from you ONLY if you charge them for your time you don't have to charge a whole lot especially if the animals are endangered but you should charge something. If you help people without charging then you are helping to keep the nere do wells in business by sweeping up after them.

I wish more people were responsible and realized how much a good fetching up means when buying an animal how much time and money you save when you buy a llama that is healthy and well trained. I think llamas and alpacas get caught up in the buy it on sale mentality.

Make sure they have a good catchpen. I would begin with showing them how to catch the animals with a rope and a wand and help them understand how to fit a halter. If the babies are really young I would recommend keeping the mothers around for the lessons but once the babies are a month or so they can have lessons together away from their moms.
