One of our 3 year alpacas recently developed a round 3 " bald spot( no drainage, no redness) on the upper part of a front leg . There is no avoidance when I daily hose down legs to keep alpaca comfortable in the heat. No changes in eating, pooping or behaviour have been noted . No other alpacas have a bald spot. Diagnosis?

We had a boy develop a bald spot in the same spot as well (see past post), it was caused by kushing in the limestone gravel. It started out bald then got dry and thick then he seemed to start favoring it we called the vet he came out and said that the favoring was more just from kicking at the flies that kept landing on it. It seemed really dry so we had him make up Dr.Evans camelid skin solution he did and we began treating the dryness, but with that came soft skin which the flies really liked and within a day it was red and raw, quickly we ran to the farm store and bought 2 products SWAT to keep the flies away and a natural fly repellant/wound spray. Both worked but SWAT was way better to keep the flies away.
So in conclusion maybe we should have just left the area dry but we were worried it might be mites. I would just watch for flies really going at the spot they can make it raw overnight, if it does go that far I recommend SWAT it keeps the flies away, once it healed I just give it a spray of Cut&Heal Multi Care Lquad spray which is natural wound healer & fly replellant smells nice and keeps the flys away.
So that's my story with our bald spot.
hope that helps
Sam:)
